Yonge Street (Toronto), 1950's, by Fraser M. McKee
From MemoryArchive
Who: Fraser M. McKee What: Early paving on Yonge St. in Toronto When: Discovered in late 1950's Where: Yonge, below King Street
I was working in downtown Toronto when they first started to dig for the subway. Down about 2 feet below the paving that was being removed they came across wooden "bricks", about 10" x 4" x 2 1/2" deep, probably of oak or maple. The hole I looked in was maybe 8 or 10' long and about as wide, and lined neatly with these wood blocks. I saved one, but it was oily or covered in tar and has disappeared over the years.
