I was in the gym that morning. It has a bank of TVs. No sound, just a text crawl. They usually show sports, daytime fodder, re-runs, and a news channel or two. People don't generally pay attention. They listen to their iPods and such. Today, though, I saw a couple people stop in front of one of the TVs. That's unusual. They weren't talking. They were just watching. I looked up at the screen. CNN was showing some grainy videos. You couldn't really comprehend what was happening. But the crawl was clear: 22 dead in Virginia Tech shooting. They just repeated the video over and over. The crawl kept crawling. Everonce and a while a taking head would appear, state the obvious, and then the video would appear again. The crawl never stopped. 22 dead....

People went back to their workouts and iPods. What else were they supposed to do?
