Who: Friend's Grandfather
What: Vietnam War
When: 2003
Where: Grandfather's House

I remember my friend's mother telling me that her father would not talk about the Vietnam War with anyone because of the unenjoyable experiences he went through during that time. One day my friend and I were sitting about the table with her grandfather and we were causally talking about war and I asked what war he had been in. That day he opened up for the first time with us about him witnessing his friends die to the left and right of him, and many other terrible experiences. It was heartbreaking to see his watery eyes fill up, but somehow I feel that it must have given him some relief to say some of the things he felt and saw, even if it wasn't the whole story.
