The Way Hurricane Katrina Affected My Friends

When we heard that a hurricane was going to hit the Gulf Coast, my family and our friends went to a shelter to wait out the storm. We stayed there until the storm had died down.

After we were able to go out of the shelter, we drove to my friends' house to see what condition it was in. Unfortunately, their house happened to be near the beach. When we got there, the house was completely demolished. The windows had been blown out and it had been flooded. Left behind by the storm surge was garbage all over the place. Their front yard was covered with what might've been their neighbors' house.

It was so depressing to see their home destroyed. I couldn't imagine what they must've felt like. All their belongings had been washed away. Everyone was hit really hard from all the devestation. Yet, it was the adults who seemed to take it more than the children. I guess it must've been because they had worked so hard on making their home look so nice, and in just one day, it was gone. They had no where else to go.

Since our families were such close friends, we couldn't just leave them, so everyone decided that we would all live in my families house. They lived with us for about two months until school started. During their stay, we went to their house almost everyday to help them rebuild. Luckily, their father happened to be a contractor, and they quickly restored their house. Actually, the house looked much better than it had been before the hurricane. Even though we got through Hurricane Katrina and recovered from the damage, I still would never want to experience that again.
