Who: Kim Chan
What: Meeting with the Last Governor of Hong Kong, Christopher Patten
When: March, 1998
Where: Arizona, USA

The most notable Governor of Hong Kong in my opinion is Chris Patten. He governed this British colony for the last 5 years leading to the final turnover to China. Governor Patten was instrumental in pushing for the 'One Country, two systems' policy under which Hong Kong is operating today. His proposal was not embraced by mainland China, and Chinese officials at one point regarded him as the 'great sinner of civilation.'

I met Chris a year after he left his position as the last Governor of Hong Kong. He agreed to be a speaker at our company's annual client conference. His comments on global, social, political, and economic trends were very well received by the audience, which was composed of US and Canadian pension administrators from corporate and governmental plans. His speech provided insights to global issues that are not widely understood by US asset owners.

While visiting Hong Kong this Novemeber, Chris Patten was in promoting his new book and speaking to the news media on the topic of China.
