Talk:Horse Drawn Wagons for Milk and Bread Delivery, 1940s, by Jim Low

From MemoryArchive

I remember milk delivery by horse drawn wagon in the late 1940's and early 1950's in Kewanee,Illinois. The driver Mr. St. John, had the route that delivered to our house on Mill Street, and I can recall seeing the wagon and horse coming up the street fairly early in the morning with Mr. St. John walking more than he rode with a wire basket that had the milk products in it. The horse knew when to stop so Mr. St. John could refresh his selection of dairy products to deliver to the next two or three houses. Time has faded the memory of the cart and horse, but I think the wagon was white with pale green trim and very clean, even in the winter. We moved from that house in 1951 or 1952, and I can't remember getting milk delivery after that time at our other houses in Kewanee, so I do not know for sure when the horse drawn wagons were discontinued. I also remember the old icebox we had where the ice had to be put in the upper compartment and I had to empty the drip pan every day-twice a day in the summertime. I know we had ice delivery but I can't remember the particular delivery person for it. I really don't miss those days-it was about a half mile to school, and it seems like it was always winter.
