Who: Carly Fabrikant What: New Jersey Nets Jersey Girl When: 90s Where: New Jersey
When I was around 10 or 11 I tried out to be a Jersey Girl. I danced my whole life so I did not think anything of it, I just went to the audition and than I heard back that I had made it. Rehearsals started, and gosh were they brutal. They were 3 times a week in the meadowlands, which is where the arena was. We got cool outfits just like the NBA players wore, that we had to wear to every game. We also got dance costumes and pom poms just like the bigger cheerleaders. We were basically mini cheerleaders. We danced at all the home games, and got to meet all the NBA players whether or not they were on the NJ side. We got to sit backstage and wait for halftime. It was just amazing, we were sitting in the same place that the players were sitting. The coolest thing was when we played the Chicago Bulls, I got to meet Michael Jordan!! Everyone was so jealous. Anyway, I always got free tickets to the games, so I would invite teachers and friends, and of course someone from my family would be there. It was just an amazing experience that I could never forget, being in that huge arena dancing in front of thousands of people. We even got to dance at the NBA draft! To be involved in something so professional at such a young age was just an unforgettable experience.
