My Friends Going to War, 2008, by David Cole

Who: David Cole What: My friends going to war When: 2003 Where: Iraq
A memory of warfare that I have is watching my friends go to war on TV. It was during my spring break of my freshman year of college. That was the week that the US invaded Iraq in 2003. Instead of hanging out with my best friend and some of my other high school friends that week I watched them go to war. It was a weird experience to see people like them on TV in combat virtually live on CNN. I couldn’t take my eyes off the TV the whole week. I thought maybe I could see one of my friends to see how they were doing. By the end of the week I had given up on trying to find them. That week was one week in which I didn’t sleep much or do much of anything else. I had felt very strange watching a war live on TV and seeing things that my friends would talk about later on TV. By the time school had started up again the war was the thing to watch on TV between classes. Overall I really didn’t like watching it just because I thought that maybe that was one of my friends being put on a medical helicopter. Eventually I just stopped watching it when I could talk to my buddies online and hear that they were ok.
