In August Of 2005, The Gulf Coast Was hit By a Category 3 hurricane, Here Is My Personal memory of Hurricane Katrina.
It Was August 29th, 2005, We were boarding up the house getting ready for what most people had thought was the end, But it was somewhat of a different story on my part. The first waves of storm surges and the 130+ MPH was coming in, We Safe from any storm surge but everyone thought that a flood Could be immenent.
The wind was pretty loud, and it was blowing into our attic, making the ceiling tiles breathe in and out, we were all huddled in the living room playing cards by a lantern just passing the time right on by. A few hours of the storm went by, and we all practically had "cabin fever", so we all went out side to just watch the storm blow through.
Everyone of us were bored, i wanted to liven up the situation. I had a thick coat, and i went outside, every gust just about knocked me over, i ducked down real low and started running against the wind, then i would just jump up into the wind and have the wind throw me backwards about ten or fifteen feet, i was havin a good ol' time outside.
We all ended up getting in my cousins truck to just ride around during the storm, for that reason and his truck had A/C and we were all hot. we drove around the corner and couldnt go any farther, the reason being the river was up about fifteen feet from its normal six feet below the road. It just dumfounded every one us seeing the river up that high, thinking about the house and that we could quite possibly lose our home if it were to come up any more. That was a thing that we didnt let bother us, we were outside having fun in a category three storm, shooting off rockets and guns and whatnot.
We were able to make phone calls for a little while, after we got home from driving around town(in the parts of town that werent flooded) I got home and my Mom was histerical, it was over my unce, the water was coming up into his house, and he was in the back of his truck floating in his driveway, along with my cousin and aunt and their German shepard, shortly after a tree knocked out the phone lines somewhere. afterwards, we heard plywood beating up against our shop, and we looked out the window and the plywood just flew away, next thing that happens is me, my brother, my cousin, and my dad, are trying to hold a piece of plywood down adn try to nail it all the while with the massive gusts and stinging rain.
the storm subsided and the cold harsh reality set in, that this storm left total devastation everywhere it went, most of my friends lost their homes, everything they owned. We came across peoples lives in the street, furniture, clothing, family heirlooms, and Corpses. It was an extremely depressing sight to watch people attempt to pick up what was left of the pieces, anything that could be saved.
When the rebuilding began, i didnt go back to school, i would have rather worked. i was working everyday, some jobs making over a hundred dollars a day, some for charity. I was working with my dad, we were helping people from all walks of life rebuild, rich or poor. It was 1st chapter of rebuilding the coast, which i knew that would be going on for years to come.
Some people just don't know how bad it was, people lost jobs, homes, business', and for some their lives. This was just One story, One voice, Out of millions.
