I was only in grade four when 9/11 happened and I was in school at the time. The teachers must have decided that we were too young to know what had happened, so all that we were told was that 'something bad has happened in the world today'. I remember trying to figure out what that something bad was as a kid, but I didn't hear anything more until I got home.
My mom had been watching it on TV for most of the day, and it was her who told me what had happened. I didn't understand at the time. It just seemed like another negative thing you heard on the news all the time, the gravity of what had happened didn't really hit me.
Now, six years later, I have a much better understanding of 9/11 and I hope that nothing like this happens again in my lifetime. I wish that the families of the people more directly affected didn't have to go through losing a family member, but all we can do now is move forward and try and stop anything like this from happening again.
It's definitely an event that I will never forget.
