In August of 2005 devastating storm named Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. Days before the storm hit many people left the Gulf Coast area. My family and I stayed though. Most of my friends and family had left for Atlanta and Texas. My mother, father, and sister were at home when the storm hit. When I woke up around 6a.m. the morning of the storm, it was already here. My mother said it had started around five in the morning.
The power was still on in our area and I went and plugged up everything I knew we would need to have after the storm to make sure it was charged. We had previously stayed in our home during another hurricane named Hurricane George so I knew that after the storm there would be no power. After I did that I looked outside. It was windy and rainy. Our street had started to flood a little, but it didn't because the water could never stay down too long before the wind blew it away.
I could see shingles and chairs being blown down the street and even one of my neighbors trampoline. From our area it didn't look like the storm was doing that much damage aside from the wind and water, but in other areas it was a different story. When the storm was over we went outside to see the damage done to our house. Aside from missing shingles, a tree breaking our gate, and a few leaks there was no real damage. We went and picked up all the shingles and cleaned up the yard.
We were happy that our home was still there and that we were all still alive and safe. We rode down on the beach with our video camera and recorded the damage there. We were lucky because some people didn't have anything left. Overall the storm brought me and my family closer and made a lot of people realize that nothing is indestructible, and that instead of saying what you don't have be happy with what you have.
