I remember the night my mom told me to go and pack my bags because we were leaving. No one was expecting Hurricane Katrina to be as bad as it really was because there were other hurricanes but they were not as bad. My step-dad was not able to leave with us because he worked for Mississippi Power and they needed all of their workers. Well my mom, my grandparents and I got all of our things together and went to stay with my great grandparents in Philadelphia,MS. We stayed up there for about three until the storm was over.
When we returned from Philadelphia we went to my grandparents house. We sat in the heat for hours because the power was out and my grandfather had not hooked up the generator. We ate M.R.E.'s (Meals Ready to Eat) and junk food (chips, candy, etc.) until we got power back in the house. I remember going to the fairgrounds waiting in the heat for the cases of water, bags of ice, and boxes of M.R.E.'s. We waited for hours in that line, but getting home and drinking the ice cold water was well worth it.
I remember riding my bike down to the beach with my cousins after the storm. Seeing the destruction it just took my breath away(literally). I could not believe it looked like someone just came thru and just dropped a bomb on the beach. It was cars on top of cars, in some cases there were homes in one spot and the roofs to it other places and some just were completely gone; nothing but just the concrete slab. There were cemetery graves opened up and bodies missing.
This is just a short description of my life after Katrina.
