Lunch Time, 2007, by Cody Hefty

Who: Cody Hefty What: Euchre When: Lunch Where: MHHS
Nearly every day at lunch for the past 4 years, I’ve been playing Euchre at my lunch table with friends. Every day we race to the lunchroom and get in line so we don’t end up waiting 15 minutes. Then when we get 4 people to sit down at the table, we break out the deck and start dealing. It’s evolved a lot through the years with different people noticing us and sitting down to play, and others learning to play. We also switch up the game by adding different rules and limitations and currently, a second deck. Double-deck Euchre is a combination of Dirty clubs and classic Euchre with 2 Euchre decks with all the 9’s removed. This leaves only enough cards for 4 people to get 10, with no blind. This way you can call how many tricks, and what suit you want, just like Dirty clubs. Then when the hand starts being played, it’s like Euchre because you need to work with your partner to get your tricks. A lot of this terminology is probably confusing to anyone who hasn’t played Euchre. And even though it can be complicated to learn at first (I had it explained to me atleast 5 times with no success of learning), but I picked up on how to play just by watching a few games. Then I played a few hands with some other guys who needed another player, and in less than 10 minutes I could play the game without looking like a complete idiot. Sure, it will take a long time to master anything, but we play every day at lunch to pass the time by. Also, it doesn’t matter if you’re a guy / girl or whoever you are, even at tournaments, there’s people there from all over the area, from 12 years old to 70 years old, they all share the same addiction for Euchre. So if you want to learn, get in on some hands, or just watch— sit down at lunch and we’ll be the ones with the Bicycle deck of cards.
