Who: Gosia What: Learning English When: 1990s? Where: United States
Moving to the United States was my parent's dream, but for me it meant that we would have to move and I would have to leave my friends. I did not really care too much why were moving and I did not completely comprehend how life was going to change. Once we arrived in the States, I realized that I understood nothing. Everything sounded like noise and it was quite confusing and could not believe that I was going to have to learn this crazy language. Once I began school I had to have a special instructor (and I later found out that I was being taught by the same woman who worked with kids who had speech impediments) who would just say words to me and I was to repeat. She would have pictures and say what it was. Literally, she would have a flashcard of a car, and say "cccc-aaaaa-rrrrr" and usually would repeat herself until I said it. I at the time that this woman was crazy, and initially she frightened me with her stare and voice. She had this booming voice and would come close to my face and encouraged me to learn my phonics. Obviously she did her job. I am happy say that I have become fluent in the English language and to think that I thought that she woman was crazy.
