The end of Childhood. Another calculus test… The fall of my senior year in high school was filled with college preparatory exams. SATs and college placement exams were foremost in my mind. Friday was tough. Calculus, Physics, and English Lit tests all the same day.
The room was silent except for the rustling of test papers and murmuring about some particularly astoundingly difficult question. We all had several, but not the same ones. A dull sound quite talking out in the hall ways. A teacher, Spanish II, I think. Never knew her name. Not my subject. She opened our classroom door and quickly spoke in a whisper to our Calc teacher.
A gasp. Sudden tears. “Just continue with your exam.” They left the room. Back to that damn question. The bell rang. “Pencils down!”
Shuffling of books and desk chairs. Then the loudspeaker “President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed a few minutes ago in Dallas, Texas.” Stupid announcement. We all knew where Dallas was.
