I was a freshman at American University in Washington, DC, when Hurricane Isabel took a turn north, and basically made a beeline for us. Anyway, the school told us to stay indoors, and be prepared for power outages, and class cancellations. As the hurricane drew nearer, signs began to appear that students were not taking the hurricane as a serious threat.

Many people began putting signs in their dorm windows that said things like, "F**k Isabel," or "Isabel, Bring it on." These are the two I remember, anyway. One guy I knew made a beer run for his fraternity, and bought about 100 bottles of 40 oz malt liquor. The brand name? "The Hurricane." Probably about 1/2 of the people I knew were drinking. Students were getting pretty wild, and when the storm finally hit, everyone was pretty excited.

Some people drank too much, and had alcohol poisoning- the only problem was, the ambulances couldn't get to them, because of the extreme winds.

A whole bunch of students did something which sounded pretty fun at the time, but I'm glad I didn't join in. They turned the main quad into a slip and slide in the middle of the hurricane. About a 1/3 of the quad was completely demolished, with the grass unrooted and mud everywhere. After these hooligans did this, they tracked mud ALL OVER the dorms, smearing it on the windows, tracking it on the floor, in the staircase, and getting mud all over the elevators.

Like I said, It sounds fun, but I'm glad I didn't join in, because the school charged the students that either admitted to their actions, or were ratted out. I don't remember exactly how much it was to pay for the damage, but it came out to a nice chunk of change.

After the hurricane, I had a couple of classes canceled, because there were downed trees everywhere, and some of my professors couldn't make it to class.
