Halloween Surprise, 2005, by Anonymous

Who: Mom, grandma, sister, dog, and me
What: My dog set the alarm off so we had to go back because we thought it was a burglar
When: 2005, Halloween
Where: Maryland, on the way to Virginia

The wind blew through my hair as I looked out the window and saw a huge sign that said WELCOME TO VIRGINIA! At the time I was thinking about my dog Tommy. He couldn’t come with us. We locked him in a small bathroom at home so he can play. Every other Halloween my mom, sister, grandma and I would go over my cousin house to trick or treat. Anyway, my sister screamed "It's Halloween!" out of the blue. That's when I said "Be quiet we’re almost there." Suddenly my mom, who was driving, got a very strange phone call.

It was the police! She picked up the phone and said "Hello." My mom began to have a very shocked look on her face. After five dead silent minutes she said “Okay, thank you we’ll be there.” She hung up the phone and made a quick U-turn. “What’s going on?” said my grandma. "The house alarm is going off, so someone must have triggered it” said my mom. “Did the police see anyone in the house” said my grandma. “No” said my mom, “the door is still locked.” The whole car was filled with confusion as we headed back home. The traffic was terrible.

We nervously pulled up at the house. Spending hours in traffic was no joke. We got out of the car and went towards the door. It was locked. Chills ran down my body as my mom opened the door. A sign of relief filled the air as my mom turned off the alarm. Everything was the way we left it. “I know we didn’t come back all the way from Virginia for nothing," my mom said angrily. It was quiet, too quiet. I looked at the basement door. It was open, and the basement door was never open. I pointed to the door and we went down stairs. We went to the bathroom that Tommy was in. The door was torn off the hinges and was on the floor with dog prints on it. I thought my mom was going to go off, but everyone just started laughing. While everyone was laughing Nyssa showed me a piece of Tommy’s hair that was on the floor. It was a trail of fur.

Nyssa and I followed the trail of Tommy’s fur. The trail of fur leaded upstairs....to my room. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I saw Tommy laying upside down on my floor with chocolate all on his fur. Nyssa thought it was the most hilarious thing she ever saw. He also ate a apple I got from church. That night was the scariest, funniest, most humiliating night that I ever had.

That night was a sad night also. After that night we had to give Tommy away. He was just to wild and he couldn’t be trained. That dog just needed help, but I always love him. This time in my life taught me that if you have a dog you have to have responsibility. Also a dog can’t be perfect or well trained by itself. My father has a dog now. He’s not as big as Tommy or as playful, but I know he’ll never tear a door down on Halloween.
