It was a crisp, Saturday morning… a perfect day for a football game. For our team, it was not just the last game of the season, but the last youth football game we would get to play. Going into the game, we were 6-0 on the season and 33-0 for our careers as football players. When Saturdays would come, the question wasn’t if we were going to win or not, but how badly we would beat the team. Maybe we got a little too used to winning, maybe it just wasn’t our day. Things just were not going our way this beautiful Saturday.

We were all up at the field early as we always were when we saw them drive up. They got out of their cars in uniforms that looked like the old-school Miami Dolphins jerseys. Sloppy. They were a mediocre team, probably .500 on the year. But they knew who we were and they came to play.

The game started with them scoring first, something we were not used to. It was not a big worry though, we figured our offense would come right back and answer. But we didn’t. They got the ball and scored again, going ahead 14-0. Now this was a little alarming. We were definitely not used to playing from behind and had never been losing by this much. Thankfully we finally got it together and put one in the end zone before half time.

The second half began with them scoring again, putting them ahead 20-7 after they missed the extra point. Things were not looking good as on our next series our quarterback and star player got injured. Playing with an inexperienced backup, we managed to put one in the end zone late in the fourth quarter. Now the defense had to stop them. They rose to the challenge and we got the ball back with three minutes left. Wanting to be the hero, the star quarterback came back into the game and marched us down the field for a touchdown. This put us ahead for the first time, 21-20, with almost no time left on the clock. We ended up winning the game and leaving the field the same way we came, undefeated.
