I was a sophmore in highschool and i wanted to do something one night other than try to get the homeless guys behind the winn dixie to buy me beer for a change. I had made friends with a guy by the name of mike who had a similar interest in bands that i was very keen on like Pavement, the pixies, jesus and mary chain, and we both shared a mutual lust for joan jett and lita ford, i guess thats just a nerdy rock guys dream girl to some extent. i called up mike and he said he was going to this bar up the street from where i was and it was cool to go in cause it was a friends bar, so i walked in and there was nothing there just a solid dive, it had two couches hard wood floors and a bar, no jukebox, no music, just beer and wine too, not even any high shelf booze, not that i would be able to tell the difference at that age anyway. When they finally did fire up the cd player they played Richard Hell and the voidoids back to back with some messed up Violent Femmes cd that skipped way too much, and the pool table was the only pride and joy of that place. the cigarette smoke in your eyes as you lined up your shot and the general consensus that the place was a dive was reached when someone spilled their drink or broke a glass and it was not cleaned up but rather left and then the next day sitll waiting to be cleaned up. thats besides the point though that night was one of the most interesting nights of my highschool life, after viewing bars as a stigma for society or a place where degenerates just get wasted for so long, i learned something that night that its what you make a place that makes it what it is, its not a scary place, sure they can be ive been tossed out of some pretty mean places, but rather a place for socializing. i dont know i guess im just tired of hearing that bars are places for people to get drunk, thats not what they are.
