So I'm trying to find some materials for class tomorrow. I teach English at a charter school in the Southeast of Washington, DC. Our focus for this quarter is the memoir. I've struggled to teach my students the value of memory and memories, but have been stonewalled. I feel as though I remember a time when folks remembered things. My students seem uninteresed in this process. I worry that the collective memory that once fed our cultures has now been atomized, reduced to free floating shards. My students seem to me marbles thrown strewn across the playground by some god-child.
