Duck and Cover, 1963, by Jeffrey T. Bondarenko

Who: Jeffrey T. Bondarenko What: Bomb Drill When: 1963 Where: Cornilus Parkway Public School, Toronto, CanadaI remember, in early grade school, practicing this drill, wherein, in the event of a nuclear blast all of us kids, as directed by the teacher, would dutifully and soberly get under our desks and quietly stay there until the drill ended. It was the height of the Cold War and I guess they thought this was the best response. Imagine thinking a children's school desk would protect anyone from an atomic bomb! They must have taken the threat seriously because I know we performed the drill more than once.
