Catholic School, 1969, D. Dutcher

From MemoryArchive

Who: D. Dutcher
What: Disciplined for writing cursive incorrectly
When: Back in 2nd grade (1969)
Where: Grade School in NY

Back when I was in 2nd grade the teacher used to hit us if we made a mistake in class. I was terrified of her. Well, one day we were learning how to write in cursive, and somehow I just couldn't understand how to write the letter "v". I kept writing a cursive "u" and couldn't seem to see the differences between the two letters. The teacher became angry with me. Then....she decided to teach a lesson to me, so she grabbed me by the hair and banged my head on the blackboard a couple of times. She then showed me again how to make a "v" correctly. And once more, she banged my head on the blackboard. (I think to drill it in all the way...Ouch!) When I told my parents, my dad asked if I NOW understood how to make the letter correctly. I said, "Yes."

And he said, "Good." ....And that's the way it was back in the old days!

To this day, I never make that mistake.
