Who: Gosia What: Cal Ripken Jr. breaks record When: Fall 1995 Where: Camden Yards; Baltimore, MarylandCal Ripken Jr was a shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles who broke the record for most consecutive games played with 2,131 games! The record was previously held by Lou Gehrig. I remember when he broke that record because it the fall of 1995 and living in Maryland it was such a huge deal.
There was news coverage for weeks which documented Ripkenās accomplishments with the Orioles. He actually was with the Orioles his whole career and his father has contributed to the teams for decades as well. That night it was a great night for baseball and it was home game. The stadium had been sold out since the beginning of the season and unfortunately my family did not have tickets but that did not stop us from going downtown and hanging around the building. People were allowed to go into the business building that is located right behind the stadium, and see the field. We were actually outside of the stadium where they had big screens all around the area and there were hundreds of people wearing orange and black. I was younger so my parents decided that we would leave early and when we went home we watched the game on the television. It was great because the stadium had fireworks that went off half way through the game and Ripken walked out onto the field and make a little speech. It seemed like it would have been quite exciting to be in the stadium but watching it on the television was still quite exciting.
