Who: Gosia What: Black Friday When: November 25, 2005 (Day after U.S. Thanksgiving) Where: Malls across AmericaThanksgiving a day to be thankful and then stuff our faces with delicious food. Recently there has been a new association with Thanksgiving and that is Black Friday. Black Friday is a term which describes the Friday after Thanksgiving where retailers in the United States have sales and stores open at an absurd time in the morning (I am talking about 5 or 6 in the morning). The reason why it is called black Friday because for many companies it is the day that their stores turn a profit and move out of the red into the black.
This year I decide that I would become a part of the herds of crazed turkey stuffed Americans and contribute to chaos in my local mall. Granted I arrived at 7 (which was late enough to miss the stampedes that were shown on the tv which consisted of people shoving, fighting and being trampled upon. Though I must admit watching that footage on tv was amazing to see how these sales seemed to possess Americans.
Upon my arrival to the mall I began to mentally prepare myself for the herds of people which I assumed would be in bad moods however I was pleasantly surprised. Perhaps it was because I stayed away from the toy stores (when I walked passed the toy store I literally saw grown adults grabbing merchandise from other adults and screaming) but the stores were bearable. There were long lines and people running around like chickens with their heads cut off but people were polite.
However there was this one crazy women which I encountered on my shopping adventure. I was at Sears looking around, and then I bumped into a lady which I will refer to as Crazy. Now crazy was pushing a shopping cart which had so much crap in it she was unable to see above the cart, hence why she bumped into me. When she bumped into me, a few items from her cart fell out onto the floor to which Crazy proceed to freak out and started screaming. But the fascinating thing is she was yelling at her cart! As she was gathering her items, she then began to curse about she could not find some bed sheets that were on sale. By this point, I had moved to the other side of the aisle so I could safely observe Crazy without fearing for my personal safety. The whole store was watching her and waiting for her to completely go berserk. She then noticed that people were staring at her and she proceed to call out a women who was laughing at her and she said something about “Christmas is bullshit.” The second she said that an employee came by and ask what the problem was and was able to calm her down. The next thing I know she is gone and everyone continued shopping. The rest of my morning was rather uneventful, and stores were not that packed. I then went home and have Pecan Pie with vanilla ice cream and recollected my Sears adventure to my family.
