Let me first say this. I happened upon the situation completely by accident, because I was doing a report on homelessness. My intent was to interview homeless people in Dupont Circle, because I knew that a lot of homeless people hung out there.

It was pretty early in the morning, probably around 8 or 9. I had gotten up, and made my way to Dupont Circle via the red line metro stop. Little did I know that I was about to step into a proverbial (political) frying pan.

When I got off the metro, I could hear chanting, but I couldn't make out what was being said. As I got closer to the Dupont circle, I saw that it was packed with people. There were people in pink shirts everywhere, and I saw a van with what looked like a picture of a bloody body on the side driving around.

When I arrived at Dupont Circle, I saw that the people in the square were pro-choice advocates, and were demonstrating for the right to abortions. In contrast, the van that had a picture of a bloody body turned out to be a pro-life advocate, and was driving around with a picture of an aborted fetus on the side of his van, sounding his opinions through a bullhorn.

Things got ugly pretty quickly. The homeless people had cleared out, probably because they didn't want any trouble. The police had stepped up their presence, and the pro choice people were becoming extremely agitated at the van, which continually circled Dupont Circle.

And then, a pro choice person ran out into the middle of the street, in the path of the van, while another pro choice person ran next to it to take pictures.

The Pro lifer got out of his van, grabbed the camera, and smashed it on the ground. This instigated a melee between the pro lifer and about 5 pro choice people, which the police broke up after about a minute. They didn't arrest anyone, but told the guy driving the van to get out of there.

Yeesh.
