This year I want to think about 9/11 2001 not from the point of view of "it's place in history" or personal memories but rather a collection of cultural memories, synchronicities and ironies.

  • Bob Dylan's "Love and Theft" was released.
(I relate to Dylan music but haven't kept up.)
  • Marissa Berenson's twin sister died.
(CABARET and Bernard is where I am stuck for better or worse)
  • 9/11 without the slash is 911, the American crisis number on the telephone.
(The ONION newspaper of Arlington, VA, their logo is an American flag and the Latin "Tu Stultus Es" which means "You are
  the/a fool")

Life is going on, but part of life going on, la vie malgre tout, is assessing the right moral, ethical, personal, historical aesthetic etc. weight, tone, color to give events, people, places in the wake of such a ultra-real symbol. Well, it's just being a writer all over again.
