Who: Matt Parker What: 9/11 Attack When: September 11th, 2001 Where: Nevada High School, Nevada, IA
I was sitting in Advanced Math when the first tower fell. A man named Bob Mittman was the professor, and he was so dedicated to teaching us math that he only allowed us to check the TV for a few minutes. There was no way he could have known of the enormous impact this event would have on our history, but I am still resentful about the restraints put on us.
Mittman's classroom was tied directly to Heather Ludwig's, who was a writing teacher. It was here students who told us, as they were allowed to watch it. The whole classroom was abuzz with excitement because nobody knew what was happening or how many people had been killed. Images of the New York skyline crumbling stayed in my head until Advanced Math was over and I got to my history class taught by the Golden Apple winning Dick Tryon. He had decided to forgo class plans in order to watch television coverage of the events. Tryon knew that he had never seen anything like this before and that we high school students hadn't either- everyone was in shock.
Sorrow didn't set in until after the death toll had been announced later that night on the news. One of the most important, yet horrible day stifled by our teacher's never ending will to teach math. Bob Mittman was dedicated to his trade.
